Sound Waves was delighted to welcome Dr Toni James as its first-ever Executive Director earlier this year, marking an exciting new chapter for the organisation as it continues to develop its music-making, education and community programmes across the Isle of Mull and beyond.
An acclaimed concert pianist and experienced charity and arts leader, Dr James brings an exceptional blend of artistic excellence and strategic leadership. Formerly the pianist of the internationally renowned Neave Trio, she has been described as one of the finest Scottish pianists of her generation.
Alongside her distinguished performing career, Dr James has held senior leadership roles across education, the arts and the charitable sector in Scotland, the United States and the Channel Islands. She was appointed Professor at the School of Music and Dance at San Diego State University, and has since become widely recognised for her leadership in the voluntary arts sector through organisations including Music in Action, CREATE Paisley, Erskine Arts and Jersey Opera House, where she led efforts to secure full refurbishment of the historic theatre.
As Executive Director, Dr James will lead Sound Waves, including the internationally recognised Mendelssohn on Mull Festival and the organisation's Mull Music Makers programme, working alongside the Board, staff, artists and community partners to shape its future.
Speaking about her appointment, Dr James said:
"It is a privilege to join Sound Waves as its first Executive Director. I am excited to collaborate with a skilled team, Board, Maxwell String Quartet, partners, and our community in Mull and beyond, as we shape the next chapter of this important part of Mull's musical story and influence the next generation of musicians."
The appointment comes at an exciting time for Sound Waves as the organisation expands its reach through performance, participation and education, building on the legacy of the Mendelssohn on Mull Festival while creating new opportunities for musicians and audiences of all ages.
